The Alcantara Gorge is a spectacular canyon bordered by 50-meter-high basalt walls, formed by the Alcantara River and by lava flows from Etna. The Alcantara River runs for 53 km from the Nebrodi Mountains to the Ionian Sea, near Messina. It's one of the few rivers in Sicily to run year-round, fed with icy snowmelt from Etna and the Nebrodi.
